NICOLAS BERNIER /// FREQUENCIES (SYNTHETIC VARIATIONS) ⊕ preview
frequencies (synthetic variations) is part of corpus of works drawing on really basic forms of sound generation process. The basic form in this iteration is digital synthesis. Created in 2013, it was actually the first work I did using digital synthesis. Before that, I was really attached to musique concrète and recording my own sounds and field recordings. Since then, most of my work is synth-based. frequencies (synthetic variations) presents a dialogue between different forms of synthetic matters : synthetic sound, but also synthetic light and synthetic materials. The piece is constructed on a series of short sequences that are organized and unorganized in real time, disruptively articulating the discourse. The first variation I composed is based on a rhythmic segment of one of my favourite songs of all time: Panasonic Youth by the math metal band Dillinger Escape Plan
Sometimes chaotic, sometimes soft depending on my mood, this performance is bursting sound and light within acrylic structures, blurring the line between hearing the light or seeing the sound.
Nicolas Bernier creates audiovisual performances and installations aiming to carve a dialogue between sound and tangible matter. Shaped by his work within the fields of cinema, literature, dance and theatre companies, his own language blend together elements of music, photography, design, science, video art, architecture, light design and scenography. In the midst of this eclecticism, his artistic concerns remain constant: the balance between the cerebral and the sensual, and between organic sources and digital processing.

JACOPO CENNI [IT] /// HUNT
Mankind has always tried to understand the complexity of the world he lives in. By creating increasingly sophisticated analysis tools, he came to get more rigorous answers. However, he was never able to catch the light he seeks.
HUNT talks about Human’s chase for the Truth. The performance features two characters on stage: the performer, who impersonates mankind, and a set of incandescent light bulbs, which represent the concept of Truth.
In the center of the stage, the performer stands still, almost in complete darkness. He begins to explore his surroundings, experimenting with the tools he has. He gets confident, but soon loses control of his actions: this excess triggers the light, of which he is first afraid, then curious.
The oscillation between Human’s dominance and loss of control of the light shapes the performance development, highlighting his stubbornness and growing frustration.
Human’s moods, oscillating between egomania and delusional states, are amplified by sound. Sound also clarifies the hunt-prey relationship between the two characters, outlining two distinct sound identities, respectively concrete and synthetic, materic and abstract.
The author aims to reconstruct the inexhaustible human thirst for knowledge through theatrical and musical materials, setting up a performance of sound theater increasingly tense and desperate.
Jacopo Cenni (1995) is a new media artist, composer and live performer from Siena (Italy). Among his various research interests, his poetics focus on the investigation of the relationship between theatrical gesture and sound art, with the adoption of an ecosystemic approach to sound and music composition. In his work, Cenni tries to amplify the non-linear relationships between the constituent elements of a system, with the aim to bring interactions and mutual influences between them to light. His relationship with technology is crucial: his goal is to blur the dichotomy between creator and tool, in order to have a true dialogue with the machine. To achieve this Cenni explodes the poetic and dramaturgical elements of his composition in several mediums, employing sound, light, and theatrical gestures. His works and live performances have been presented in several institutions and festivals, such as La Biennale di Venezia (IT), Glasgow Science Center (UK), Tempo Reale (IT), Fondazione Luigi Nono (IT) and more. Cenni’s artistic output ranges between sound theater, electroacoustic composition, improvisation and data sonification.
⊕ MA/IN academy
It is part of a comprehensive program dedicated to training and education in contemporary music on multiple levels and for various target groups. The offerings include content for a general audience, such as lecture-concerts by Luca Iavarone, who will annually delve into different periods of electronic music history from the 20th century to today. Additionally, there will be talks with artists, listening introductions, and concerts commemorating the centenaries of significant composers.
For high school music students, the program includes masterclasses with artists to introduce them to the creative process, allowing active participation in certain project activities. Students from partner Conservatories will also be involved in a training path, where they will engage with important composers to create electroacoustic compositions to be presented within the MA/IN project.
A specialized track is designed for selected young composers through an international call, offering them an advanced course for presenting their works in world premieres.
⊕ LIGETI100
It is a tribute to the music of György Ligeti, a Hungarian composer often regarded as one of the greatest composers of 20th century music. The year 2023 marks a century of Ligeti.
